New blog: joining up health and social care

New blog: joining up health and social care

A new blog has been published by NHSX about the importance of technology in joining up health and social care.

The article is by NHSX, the unit responsible for driving digital transformation of care. It covers how the NHS and local councils have moved rapidly to implement technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes working with providers on the basic infrastructure and technology needed to meet their immediate priorities.

NHSX, the Local Government Association and the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services have formed a partnership to work together on key digital projects to join up care between social care and the NHS. The article covers some of the basic issues, such as reliable access to the internet, accessing and sharing information, and data security.

The blog is written by Ian James, Deputy Chair of NHSX Joining Up Care Strategic Oversight Board and Iain O’Neil, Digital Transformation Director.

They recognise that joining up care is complicated but are confident that the actions already taken to support providers during winter has helped meet some of the immediate technical challenges.

The blog covers future plans to overcome barriers and create the first “building blocks” to join up social care and the NHS.
