It is really important that we have good data security in our organisations. This is because it is vital that people trust us to share and use their information safely and appropriately. This is true whether information is stored and shared on paper or digitally.

Over the last couple of years, the need for health and care organisations to show that we can share information safely has grown. This is due to a combination of regulatory, policy and legislative changes. The boxes below all have information about the current legal landscape and guidance on what your organisation can do to protect the information you hold. We also have written guidance on how to complete the Data Security and Protection Toolkit. We recommend using this Toolkit to assess your data security compliance.

If you complete the Toolkit to Entry Level then you can apply for access to NHSmail (please note that the option to complete Entry Level will come to an end on December 31st 2020). Completing the Toolkit to Standards Met is the minimum compliance level that health and social care organisations need to meet to take part in national shared care records projects like the Summary Care Record pilot.
