Data Security and Protection Toolkit waiver for social care update

Data Security and Protection Toolkit waiver for social care update

An update from Karen Dooley (NHSX / Department of Health and Social Care) on the Data Security and Protection Toolkit waiver.

To support the COVID-19 response, NHSX temporarily waived the requirement for social care providers to complete the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) before accessing NHSMail. This message sets out the next steps and our support for care providers.

All social care providers using NHSMail must register with the DSPT (i.e. sign up and provide contact details) by 30th September 2020. This will enable the DSPT team to more easily contact and support providers, including those operating under the waiver. Revised guidance on how to register with the DSPT will be issued on 14th August, which providers are advised to await before registering. This is the only action that providers are required to do before 30th September 2020 to ensure ongoing NHSMail access. While care providers must register by 30th September, they are not yet required to complete or comply with the DSPT.

We will be consulting widely over the coming months to decide when the requirement for social care providers to gain DSPT compliance for NHSMail access should be reintroduced, but it will not be before March 2021.  In October 2020, we will launch a comprehensive programme of support for social care providers to enable compliance with the 20/21 DSPT. This will include:

  • A refreshed Social Care DSPT designed in collaboration with Digital Social Care that is more relevant and accessible to social care providers, including more recognition of providers that have started but not completed their compliance journey.
  • Direct expert support to enable compliance with and completion of the new Social Care DSPT.

More detailed information, including links to the revised DSPT registration guidance, will be provided in August 2020.

Thank you,

Karen Dooley
